About this meditation
This 18-minute guided meditation borrows from the biological wisdom of hibernation. You'll walk through a snowy moonlit forest, find an earthen burrow under an ancient tree, and let golden, honey-thick warmth slowly turn off the body — toes, calves, hips, spine, shoulders, jaw — until you're fully off-duty for the night.
For the kind of evening when the world has felt loud and the body wants to be hidden, secret, and held.

Hello, and welcome to Sleep Better. I'm your host, from the hive.
Thank you for choosing to be here tonight. I know there are many places your mind might want to be right now — replaying the events of the day, or worrying about the tasks of tomorrow. But you have made a conscious choice to be here, in the present, prioritizing your rest. That is a small victory, and it is enough.
Tonight, we are going to journey into the earth. We are going to explore the ancient, biological wisdom of hibernation.
In our modern world, we often feel guilty for stopping. We feel the pressure to be in constant motion, like a machine that never powers down. But you are not a machine. You are a living, breathing being, and just like the trees and the bears, you require a season of rest.
So, let's begin by curating your environment. I want you to make sure you are as comfortable as you can possibly be. Adjust your pillow so your neck feels fully supported. Pull the covers up over your shoulders, tucking yourself in like a precious package. If there is any tension in your clothing or the room, adjust it now. This is your sanctuary.
Now, gently close your eyes. Let's simply notice that the day is over. The sun has set. The world outside is slowing down, and it is time for you to sync your rhythm with the rhythm of the night. There is nothing left for you to solve right now. There is no email to answer, no conversation to finish. Everything can wait.
Turn your attention to your breathing. We aren't trying to force a deep breath yet, just observing the natural tide of your body. Notice the cool air touching the tip of your nose as you inhale. Notice the slightly warmer air flowing past your lips as you exhale. In and out. Cool and warm. The simple, automatic rhythm of life that supports you without you even having to ask.
With each exhale, I want you to imagine you are releasing a little bit of the day's static. Imagine the stress is a gray mist, and every time you breathe out, you are blowing that mist away from your body, watching it dissipate into the air until it is gone. You are clearing the space. You are preparing to go deep.
Now that your body is beginning to settle, let's go on a journey.
I want you to visualize that you are standing at the edge of a vast, ancient forest. It is the middle of winter. The air is crisp and pure, the kind of air that feels cleansing when it enters your lungs.
It is twilight. The sky above is a deep, rich indigo, speckled with the very first stars of the evening. The moon is full and bright, casting a silver glow over everything.
Look at the ground. It is covered in a thick, pristine blanket of white snow. It looks soft, like powdered sugar. You are dressed perfectly for this weather. You are wearing a heavy coat that reaches down to your knees, thick wool socks, and sturdy boots. You feel completely warm, wrapped in layers of softness, protected from the chill.
You begin to walk into the forest. Listen to the sound of your footsteps. Crunch... crunch... crunch. It is a satisfying, rhythmic sound. With every step, you are walking further away from the noise of the city, further away from your responsibilities, and deeper into the quiet of nature.
Look at the trees around you. They are tall pines and heavy oaks. Their branches are dusted with snow, standing perfectly still in the moonlight. Notice how the trees are not rushing. They are not trying to grow leaves or produce fruit right now. They are conserving their energy. They are resting. They trust that spring will come, but they know that right now, their only job is to stand tall and sleep.
You feel a sense of kinship with these trees. You, too, are allowed to just stand still. You, too, are allowed to conserve your energy. As you walk deeper into the woods, the silence wraps around you like a scarf. It is a heavy, peaceful silence — the kind of quiet that lets your shoulders drop an inch lower.
Up ahead, you see a small hill. At the base of the hill, beneath the roots of a massive, ancient tree, there is an opening. A soft, golden light is spilling out from it, contrasting with the blue light of the snow. You feel a magnetic pull toward this place. You know, instinctively, that this is your place. This is where you go to recharge. This is your winter burrow.
You approach the opening. The snow around the entrance has been cleared away. You stoop down low, humbling yourself to the earth, and you crawl inside.
Instantly, the temperature changes. You leave the crisp, cold air of the winter night behind and enter a space that is warm, dry, and smells of rich earth, dried lavender, and beeswax.
Stand up and look around your burrow. It is a round room, carved directly out of the earth. The walls are not cold stone; they are warm, packed soil, interlaced with the thick, strong roots of the tree above. These roots act like the beams of a house, holding the ceiling up, creating a structure that has stood for centuries. You are safe here.
In the center of the room, there is a large, inviting bed. It is essentially a nest. It is built of soft mosses, memory foam, and layers upon layers of thick, heavy quilts. You take off your heavy winter coat and hang it by the door. You take off your boots. You feel the softness of a thick rug beneath your socks.
You move toward the bed. You are so tired. It is the good kind of tired — the kind that feels like you've done enough. You climb into the nest. The mattress conforms to your body immediately, holding you, supporting every curve of your spine. You pull the heavy quilts up. They have a comforting weight to them. You pull them up over your legs, over your waist, over your chest, right up to your chin.
You wiggle deeper into the warmth. You can feel your body temperature adjusting, the warmth of the blankets meeting the warmth of your skin. You look up at the ceiling of the burrow. You see the tangled roots of the great tree. You know that above you, feet of snow and soil are insulating you from the world. The wind might be blowing outside, but you cannot hear it. The world might be busy upstairs, but down here, time has stopped.
You are hidden. You are secret. No one knows where you are, and no one needs anything from you. You are simply a creature in its den, safe for the winter.
Now, let's turn off the body, switch by switch, just like powering down a house for the night. Bring your awareness all the way down to your toes. Imagine a warm, golden honey is beginning to pour over your feet. Feel it coating your toes, your arches, your heels. Feel the muscles in your feet go slack. They have carried you all day, but now they are off duty. Let them fall open to the sides.
Let that feeling of warm, heavy honey move up into your ankles and your shins. Feel it wrapping around your calves. Any tension you are holding in your legs is dissolving into this warmth. Your legs are becoming heavy logs, sinking deeper and deeper into the mattress. They are too heavy to lift. They are completely at rest.
The warmth rises up into your knees and your thighs. These are large muscles, often holding tight even when we don't realize it. Visualize the fibers of your thigh muscles unspooling, lengthening, and softening. Your hips release their grip. You feel your lower back flatten and settle against the support of the bed. You are fully supported by the earth beneath you.
Move your attention to your stomach. Let it be soft. Let it rise and fall gently with your breath, like a sleeping ocean. There is no need to hold it in. Just let it be loose. The warmth travels up your spine, vertebra by vertebra, soothing the muscles of your back. It flows into your shoulders. Exhale and feel your shoulders drop away from your ears. Imagine two heavy bags of sand have been cut loose from your shoulders, and you are floating free.
The warmth flows down your arms, past your elbows, into your wrists and hands. Your fingers curl naturally. Your palms are open. You are not grasping anything. You are not holding onto the past, and you are not reaching for the future. Your hands are empty and at peace.
Finally, let the relaxation travel up your neck and into your jaw. Unclench your teeth. Let your tongue float in the center of your mouth. Soften your cheeks. Soften the tiny muscles around your eyes. Smooth out your forehead, wiping away any lines of worry. Your entire face is blank, smooth, and serene.
You are now in a state of deep hibernation. Your body is asleep, even if your mind is still faintly listening. You are safe in the burrow. The earth is holding you. The roots are protecting you.
Visualize the seasons passing quickly above you, while you stay timeless below. You are recharging your reserves. You are knitting your cells back together. You are drinking in the nectar of sleep.
Everything is fine. You are okay. The hive is safe.
Drift now. Float on this feeling of heavy warmth. There is nothing left to do but let go.
Drifting deeper. Sinking lower. Into the velvet dark. Into the quiet.
Goodnight. And sleep better.
